Safety first: Continuous safety trips indicate a serious problem. Turn OFF gas and power if you smell strong combustion odors or see scorch marks.
- Check filter and airflow: Replace the furnace filter and ensure all registers are open to reduce overheating.
- Inspect rollout switches: With power OFF, locate rollout switches near the burners. If they have a small reset button, press gently once. If they immediately trip again on the next cycle, shut the furnace down and call a technician.
- Reset control board: Turn power OFF for 5 minutes, then restore. Some Kelvinator boards require cycling the thermostat from HEAT to OFF and back to clear lockout.
- Professional inspection: If E17 returns, a technician must inspect the heat exchanger, venting, and burner operation before the furnace is used again.
