E6
Kelvinator High Limit Switch Open / Overheat Lockout

Kelvinator furnace shows E6 and the blower runs continuously without heat

Possible Causes

Restricted airflow due to dirty furnace filter, Closed or blocked supply/return registers, Failed high limit switch stuck open, Blower motor not running at correct speed

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF power before removing panels. Components near the heat exchanger may be hot.

  • Replace or clean filter: Locate the return air filter (often in the blower compartment or return grille). Replace with the correct size and airflow rating. A severely clogged filter is the most common cause of limit trips.
  • Check registers and grilles: Open all supply registers and return grilles in the home. Remove rugs or furniture blocking airflow.
  • Inspect blower wheel: Remove the blower compartment door and visually inspect the blower wheel for heavy dust buildup. Excess debris reduces airflow and can cause overheating. Clean if heavily coated (this may require blower removal).
  • Reset power: After correcting airflow issues, turn power back on and call for heat. The control board will usually reset the E6 code after a successful cycle.
  • Limit switch check: If the furnace still shows E6 immediately and never attempts to fire, the high limit switch may be stuck open and require replacement with a Kelvinator-approved limit.
