Possible Causes
Accumulated dust on heat exchanger and burners, Long period of inactivity, Dirty supply ducts
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you smell a strong electrical burning odor or see smoke, turn OFF the furnace and investigate. A light dusty smell at first startup is usually normal.
- Open windows: When first starting the Kelvinator furnace after months of inactivity, open a few windows to ventilate while dust burns off.
- Replace filter: Install a clean filter to capture loosened dust.
- Inspect for actual burning: Remove the blower door and look for melted wiring or scorch marks. If found, shut down and call a technician.
- Duct cleaning: If the smell persists for days, consider having ducts professionally cleaned.
