Possible Causes

No gas supply to furnace, Faulty hot surface ignitor, Faulty flame sensor, Gas valve not opening

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power to the furnace at the service switch and shut off gas at the gas cock before removing panels. If you smell gas continuously, evacuate and contact the gas utility or a licensed technician immediately.

Steps to check:

  • Verify thermostat call for heat: Set thermostat to HEAT and raise the setpoint 5°F above room temperature. Confirm the thermostat is powered and wiring to the R and W terminals on the Luxaire control board is secure.
  • Check gas supply: Ensure the manual gas shutoff valve near the furnace is parallel to the pipe (open). Confirm other gas appliances in the home operate normally.
  • Inspect hot surface ignitor: Remove the burner access panel. Locate the ignitor mounted near the burners. Look for cracks, white spots, or breaks in the element. If damaged, replace with a Luxaire-compatible silicon nitride ignitor rated for your model.
  • Clean or inspect flame sensor: Locate the flame sensor rod at the burner. Remove the mounting screw, gently clean the rod with fine steel wool or emery cloth, wipe with a clean dry cloth, and reinstall. Ensure the wire connection is tight.
  • Check gas valve wiring: Confirm the 2-wire harness to the gas valve is firmly connected and not damaged. With power on and a call for heat, a technician should verify 24 VAC at the gas valve terminals when ignition is attempted.

When to call a pro: If the ignitor and flame sensor are clean and intact, and gas supply is confirmed, the issue may be with the gas valve or control board. These require professional diagnosis and gas leak testing.
