Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power before removing panels. Components near the burners can be hot; allow the furnace to cool.
Steps to check:
- Replace or clean air filter: Locate the filter in the return air duct or blower compartment. If it is dirty or clogged, replace it with the correct size and airflow rating recommended for your Maytag furnace.
- Check registers and returns: Walk through the home and open all supply registers and return grilles. Avoid blocking them with furniture or rugs.
- Inspect blower operation: With the access panel on and power restored, call for heat and observe through the sight glass. Confirm the blower starts within a minute or so after burner ignition. If it does not start, or starts late, the blower motor or control board fan relay may be faulty.
- Inspect high limit switch: The high limit is usually mounted on the heat exchanger panel. With power off, check that its wiring is secure. A limit that repeatedly opens may be weak and require replacement.
When to call a technician: If the furnace continues to trip the high limit after filter replacement and airflow checks, or if the blower motor is not running properly, have a technician evaluate the heat exchanger, blower speed settings, and ductwork.
