Possible Causes

Recent power interruption, control board just powered up, thermostat call just initiated, loose low-voltage wiring at control, faulty thermostat

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power to the furnace at the service switch or breaker before touching any wiring. Do not bypass safety devices.

This code on many Payne furnaces simply indicates that the control has powered up and there is no stored fault.

  • Check for normal operation: Set the thermostat to HEAT and raise the setpoint 5°F above room temperature. Watch the sequence: inducer motor → pressure switch closure → igniter glow → gas valve open → burners light → blower starts. If all steps occur, the code 11 is informational only.
  • Inspect thermostat wiring: With power off, remove the furnace blower door and locate the control board. Verify that the R and W thermostat wires are firmly connected and not corroded or broken.
  • Check for loose low-voltage connections: Gently tug each low-voltage wire (R, W, Y, G, C) at the control board terminals. Tighten any loose screws.
  • Power cycle: Turn power off for 30 seconds, then back on. If the furnace now runs normally and no other code appears, no repair is needed.
  • If no heat call: If the thermostat is calling for heat but the control never responds, test or replace the thermostat and verify 24 VAC between R and C at the furnace.
