Possible Causes

Weak or cracked hot surface igniter, no gas supply to burners, faulty gas valve, improper ground, low inlet gas pressure, dirty burner orifice

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off gas and power before removing burner compartment doors. Gas leaks and ignition failures can be dangerous.

  • Verify gas supply: Ensure the gas shutoff valve near the furnace is fully open (handle parallel to pipe). Confirm other gas appliances (stove, water heater) are working.
  • Inspect hot surface igniter: With power off, remove the burner access panel. Locate the igniter near the burners. Look for cracks, white spots, or damage. If damaged, replace with the correct Payne-rated igniter.
  • Check igniter glow: Restore power and call for heat. Observe through the sight glass: the igniter should glow bright orange before gas is released. If it does not glow, test for 120 VAC at the igniter leads during ignition. If voltage is present but no glow, replace the igniter.
  • Listen for gas valve click: After igniter glows, you should hear a click and see flame. If the igniter glows but no flame appears, suspect a gas valve or gas supply issue.
  • Clean burners and orifices: If ignition is delayed or uneven, remove burners (power and gas off) and clean rust and debris. Ensure burner orifices are not plugged.
  • Check ground and polarity: Verify the furnace is properly grounded and line/neutral are correctly wired. Incorrect polarity can cause ignition problems.
