Possible Causes
Failed blower motor, failed blower run capacitor, loose blower wiring, seized blower wheel, defective control board fan relay
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power before reaching into the blower compartment. The blower can start unexpectedly.
- Check blower operation: Set thermostat fan switch to ON. If the blower does not run, suspect a blower motor or capacitor issue.
- Inspect blower wheel: Remove the blower compartment door. Try to spin the blower wheel by hand (power off). It should spin freely. If it is stiff or scraping, clean or replace the wheel and check for obstructions.
- Test capacitor: Locate the blower run capacitor (metal can with two or three terminals). If it is bulged or leaking, replace it with the same µF rating and voltage.
- Check motor wiring: Verify all motor leads are firmly connected to the control board or fan relay. Look for burned connectors.
- Measure motor voltage: With power on and a call for fan/heat, carefully measure voltage at the motor leads. If proper voltage is present but the motor does not run, replace the blower motor.
