Possible Causes
Failed ECM blower motor module, failed PSC blower motor, incorrect motor tap wiring, seized blower wheel, defective control board fan output
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before working on the blower assembly. Capacitors can hold a charge; discharge them properly.
- Check for airflow at registers: With a call for heat or fan ON, verify if air is coming from supply registers. Weak or no airflow suggests blower issues.
- Inspect blower wheel and housing: Remove blower assembly (power off). Clean dust buildup from blades. Ensure the wheel spins freely and is not rubbing.
- Identify motor type: Payne furnaces may use PSC (with capacitor) or ECM (electronic) motors. For PSC, test/replace the run capacitor. For ECM, inspect the motor module for burn marks.
- Check motor voltage: With power on and a call for fan, carefully measure voltage at the motor connector. If correct voltage is present but motor does not run, replace the motor (or ECM module).
- Verify correct speed tap (PSC): Ensure the correct speed lead is connected to HEAT on the control board per the wiring diagram.
