How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power before accessing the control board or thermostat wiring.
- Check thermostat fan setting: Ensure the fan switch is set to AUTO, not ON.
- Inspect thermostat wiring: At the furnace, disconnect the G wire from the control board. If the blower stops, the thermostat or wiring is energizing G continuously.
- Check for limit trip: If the high limit is open, some Payne furnaces run the blower to cool the heat exchanger. Inspect for airflow issues and reset/replace the limit as needed.
- Test fan relay: If the blower runs even with all thermostat wires removed, the fan relay on the control board is likely stuck closed. Replace the control board.
