Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: A flame rollout or heat exchanger issue is serious. If you see scorch marks, melted wiring, or smell strong combustion fumes, shut off gas and power and contact a licensed HVAC technician immediately.
Steps to check (homeowner level):
- Inspect rollout switches: With power off, locate the manual reset rollout switches near the burner compartment. If a rollout switch has a small red reset button, press it once to reset. If it trips again, do not continue to reset—call a technician.
- Check for visible soot or scorching: Look around burners and front of heat exchanger for black soot, discoloration, or melted components. These are signs of improper combustion.
- Inspect flame sensor wiring: Ensure the flame sensor lead is not pinched or touching metal, which can cause false flame sensing.
- Do not attempt heat exchanger repairs: Heat exchanger inspection and replacement must be done by a qualified Ruud service provider.
