Possible Causes

Failed hot surface ignitor, Loose ignitor wiring, Faulty gas valve coil, Control board not sending 24V to gas valve

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off gas and power before removing burner access panel. Avoid touching the ignitor element with bare fingers.

Steps to check:

  • Observe ignition sequence: With the panel on and power restored, watch through the sight glass. Confirm inducer starts, pressure switch closes, then check if the ignitor glows.
  • Inspect ignitor: If the ignitor does not glow, remove it and check for cracks or breaks. Replace with the correct Ruud OEM ignitor if damaged.
  • Check ignitor connector: Ensure the plug at the ignitor and at the control board is fully seated and not burnt.
  • Gas valve operation: If the ignitor glows but burners never light and you do not smell gas, the gas valve may not be opening. This requires a technician to test 24V at the valve and gas pressure.
