Possible Causes

Failed hot surface ignitor, faulty Tappan gas valve, broken ignitor wiring harness, low or no gas supply to furnace

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: If you smell strong gas, shut off gas at the furnace gas cock, ventilate the area, and contact the gas company immediately. Do not operate electrical switches.

Steps (for mild or no gas odor):

  • Turn off power and gas to the furnace. Remove the burner compartment door.
  • Locate the hot surface ignitor (HSI) near the burners. Inspect for visible cracks or white spots. If damaged, replace with the correct Tappan-rated ignitor; do not touch the new ignitor surface with bare fingers.
  • Check the ignitor connector and wiring harness for burns or loose connections. Reseat the plug on the control board.
  • Restore power and call for heat while observing through the sight glass. If the ignitor does not glow at all, test for 120 VAC at the ignitor leads during the ignition sequence. If voltage is present but no glow, the ignitor is bad. If no voltage, the control board or safety circuit is at fault.
  • If the ignitor glows but burners do not light and you hear no gas flow, the gas valve may be stuck closed or there may be no gas supply. Confirm the manual gas shutoff is open and contact a professional to test gas pressure and valve operation.
