Possible Causes

Contaminated burners, improper flame carryover between burners, weak hot surface ignitor, incorrect line voltage to Tappan control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power and gas before servicing burners.

Steps:

  • Remove the burner assembly following the Tappan service manual (disconnect gas manifold, ignitor, and flame sensor wiring as needed).
  • Clean each burner with a soft brush and compressed air. Ensure the crossover ports between burners are clear so flame can travel from the ignited burner to the others.
  • Inspect the hot surface ignitor for proper positioning relative to the burner. Adjust mounting if necessary so the ignitor is fully in the gas stream.
  • Check line voltage at the furnace (L1 to neutral) to ensure it is within 110–125 VAC. Low voltage can cause weak ignition.
  • Reassemble, restore gas and power, and reset the control by turning power off for 30 seconds. Observe a full ignition sequence. If lockout returns, the control board or gas valve may require replacement by a technician.
