Possible Causes
Dust burning off heat exchanger (normal at first use), overheated blower motor, loose electrical connections on Tappan control board, melting wire insulation
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: If you smell a strong electrical or plastic-burning odor, turn off power immediately and do not operate the furnace until inspected.
Steps:
- For mild dust smell at first seasonal startup, this may be normal and should dissipate after a few cycles. Open windows for ventilation.
- Remove the blower door and inspect wiring for discoloration, melted insulation, or loose connections. Tighten any loose screws on terminal blocks.
- Check the blower motor for signs of overheating (very hot to touch, discoloration). If suspected, have the motor and capacitor tested and replaced if necessary.
- If any components appear burned, replace them and investigate the cause (overcurrent, short, or mechanical binding).
