Possible Causes
Dirty flame sensor, Poor ground between burner and Tempstar control board, Weak flame due to low gas pressure, Partially blocked burner ports
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power and gas before removing the flame sensor or burners.
- Step 1 – Clean flame sensor: Remove the flame sensor and gently polish the rod with fine steel wool. Reinstall and ensure it is in the flame path.
- Step 2 – Check ground: Tighten burner rack and manifold screws to ensure a solid ground path. Inspect the ground wire from the control board to the furnace chassis.
- Step 3 – Clean burners: Remove burners if accessible and clean ports with a brush and compressed air. Reinstall in the correct order.
- Step 4 – Have gas pressure checked: If flames appear weak or unstable, have a technician measure and adjust gas pressure.
