Possible Causes

Dirty or cracked hot surface ignitor, Faulty gas valve not opening, Low gas pressure to Tempstar gas valve, Faulty ignition control circuit on control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off gas at the shutoff valve and power at the breaker before removing burner or ignitor components. Gas leaks or improper ignition can cause fire or explosion.

  • Step 1 – Observe ignition sequence: Restore power and call for heat. Confirm the inducer motor starts, pressure switch closes, and the ignitor glows. If the ignitor does not glow, suspect the ignitor or control board.
  • Step 2 – Inspect hot surface ignitor: With power off, remove the ignitor from the burner assembly. Check for cracks, white spots, or damage. Do not touch the element with bare fingers. Replace with the correct Tempstar-rated ignitor if damaged.
  • Step 3 – Check ignitor voltage: During a call for heat, measure voltage at the ignitor connector (typically 120V AC). If no voltage is present while the board is calling for ignition, the control board may be faulty.
  • Step 4 – Verify gas valve operation: Ensure the manual gas shutoff is open. Listen for a click at the gas valve when the ignitor is hot. If there is no click and no gas flow, test for 24V at the gas valve terminals during ignition. If 24V is present but the valve does not open, replace the Tempstar gas valve.
  • Step 5 – Check gas supply: If the valve opens but burners do not light, have a licensed gas technician verify inlet gas pressure and check for line obstructions.
  • Step 6 – Clear lockout: After correcting the issue, cycle power to clear the lockout and verify normal ignition.
