Possible Causes

Dirty or blocked air filter, Closed or restricted supply registers, Dirty Tempstar evaporator coil, Failed high limit switch

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power before accessing internal components. Do not bypass the limit switch for normal operation.

  • Step 1 – Replace or clean filter: Locate the furnace filter in the return duct or blower compartment. Replace with the correct size and airflow rating. Avoid overly restrictive filters.
  • Step 2 – Check airflow: Ensure all supply registers and return grilles are open and not blocked by furniture or rugs. Verify that dampers in ductwork are open.
  • Step 3 – Inspect evaporator coil: Remove the access panel above the furnace to view the Tempstar A-coil. If the coil is matted with dust or pet hair, have it professionally cleaned.
  • Step 4 – Verify blower speed: Confirm the blower motor speed tap for HEAT is set correctly per the Tempstar installation manual. Too low a speed can cause overheating.
  • Step 5 – Test limit switch: With power off, disconnect the wires from the high limit switch and test for continuity. If it remains open at room temperature, replace the limit switch with the correct Tempstar part.
