Possible Causes
Failing ECM blower motor on Tempstar variable-speed furnace, Loose blower wiring harness, Obstructed blower wheel, Faulty control board blower relay or ECM module
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power before accessing the blower compartment.
- Step 1 – Inspect blower wheel: Remove the blower compartment door and slide out the blower assembly. Check the wheel for dust buildup or foreign objects. Clean with a brush and vacuum.
- Step 2 – Check wiring harness: Inspect the multi-pin connector between the ECM motor and the Tempstar control board or ECM module. Reseat the connector and look for corrosion or burnt pins.
- Step 3 – Verify motor rotation: Restore power and briefly call for heat or fan. Confirm the blower starts promptly and spins in the correct direction without unusual noise.
- Step 4 – Test capacitor (PSC motors): If your Tempstar model uses a PSC blower motor, test the run capacitor with a meter. Replace if out of tolerance.
- Step 5 – Replace ECM motor or module if needed: If the ECM motor does not respond or runs erratically despite proper power and signals, the ECM motor or module may be defective and should be replaced with the correct Tempstar part by a technician.
