Possible Causes

Dust accumulation on heat exchanger, Dust on Tempstar electric heating elements (if present), Dirty blower compartment, Long period of inactivity

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Note: A mild burning-dust smell is common for the first few cycles each season. It should dissipate quickly.

  • Step 1 – Run furnace: Allow the furnace to run for 20–30 minutes with a few windows slightly open to ventilate.
  • Step 2 – Inspect and clean: With power off, vacuum dust from accessible areas in the blower compartment and around the burners (do not disturb burner alignment).
  • Step 3 – Replace filter: Install a clean filter to capture additional dust.
  • Step 4 – If smell persists: If the odor is strong, chemical, or persists beyond a few hours of operation, shut down the furnace and have a technician inspect for electrical overheating or other issues.
