Possible Causes
Closed manual gas shutoff to Tempstar furnace, Faulty gas valve, No gas supply or low pressure, Broken ignitor or misaligned spark electrode (spark models)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Warning: Gas work can be hazardous. If you smell gas continuously, evacuate and contact your gas utility.
- Step 1 – Confirm gas supply: Ensure the manual gas shutoff valve near the furnace is parallel to the pipe (open). Verify other gas appliances in the home are working.
- Step 2 – Observe ignition: Call for heat and watch the sequence. If the ignitor does not glow or spark, test and replace the Tempstar ignitor or spark assembly as needed.
- Step 3 – Check gas valve operation: Listen for a click at the gas valve when the ignitor is hot. If there is no click, measure for 24V at the valve terminals during ignition. If 24V is present but no gas flows, replace the gas valve.
- Step 4 – Professional gas pressure check: Have a licensed technician verify inlet and manifold gas pressures and adjust or correct supply issues.
