How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power before servicing. Use caution on ladders or roofs when inspecting vent terminations.
Steps to check:
- Inspect venting: Check the PVC intake and exhaust pipes from the Trane furnace to the outside. Remove any visible obstructions such as leaves, ice, bird nests, or insect screens clogged with debris.
- Check inducer operation: Restore power and call for heat. Observe if the inducer motor starts and runs smoothly. Listen for grinding or humming. If the inducer does not start, the pressure switch will remain open.
- Inspect tubing and ports: With power off, remove the rubber tubing from the pressure switch and inducer housing. Ensure the ports are not plugged with rust or debris. Use a small drill bit or paperclip gently to clear the port (do not enlarge the hole).
- Test pressure switch: Use a multimeter to check continuity across the pressure switch terminals while the inducer is running. The switch should close (show continuity) when proper draft is present. If it stays open, the switch may be defective.
When to call a professional: If the inducer is noisy, seized, or not starting, or if the pressure switch does not close despite clear venting, contact a Trane-qualified technician to replace the inducer assembly or pressure switch.
