Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power and gas before removing burner assembly. If you smell gas, stop and call your gas utility.
Steps to check:
- Clean flame sensor: Remove and clean the flame sensor rod with fine steel wool. Ensure it is positioned directly in the burner flame when reinstalled.
- Inspect burners: Remove burner assembly if accessible. Clean rust, scale, and debris from burner ports with a wire brush. Ensure burners are seated correctly and aligned.
- Check gas supply: Confirm the manual gas shutoff is fully open. If other gas appliances show low flame or issues, contact your gas provider.
- Observe operation: Restore power and gas, then call for heat. Watch through the sight glass: burners should light smoothly and stay lit. If they light then drop out, the flame sensor or gas valve may be failing.
When to call a professional: If flame repeatedly drops out, if you suspect low gas pressure, or if the gas valve is suspected faulty, have a licensed technician test gas pressure and replace components as needed.
