Possible Causes

Pellet/coal jam in auger tube, Foreign object in hopper or auger, Worn or seized auger motor, Bent or damaged auger flighting

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off the furnace, unplug it, and allow it to cool. Never reach into the auger or hopper while the unit is powered.

Steps:

  • 1. Empty the hopper: Scoop out fuel from the hopper into a metal container. Check for foreign objects such as screws, stones, or wood chunks.
  • 2. Access the auger: Remove the rear or side access panel per the manual to expose the auger motor and auger tube.
  • 3. Check for jams: Disconnect the auger motor from power. Remove the motor mounting bolts and gently pull the motor away from the auger shaft. Try to rotate the auger by hand (using gloves). If it will not turn, there is likely a jam.
  • 4. Clear the obstruction: Use a wooden dowel or similar tool to push the jammed material out of the auger tube from the firebox side or hopper side. Do not use excessive force that could bend the auger.
  • 5. Inspect the auger and bearings: Look for bent flighting, worn bushings, or excessive play in the auger shaft. Replace damaged components.
  • 6. Test the auger motor: With the motor removed, spin the shaft by hand; it should turn smoothly. If it is stiff, noisy, or does not run when powered (test by a qualified person), replace the auger motor.
  • 7. Reassemble and test: Reinstall the auger motor, ensuring the coupling is secure. Refill the hopper with clean, dry fuel and restart the furnace. Monitor for normal feeding and verify that Er7 does not return.
