Possible Causes
Leaking door or ash pan gaskets, Loose flue pipe connections, Blocked chimney or vent, Negative house pressure overpowering draft
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the furnace immediately if smoke enters the living space. Ventilate the area and do not use the unit until the issue is corrected.
Steps:
- 1. Inspect door and ash pan gaskets: Check for frayed, hardened, or missing gasket material. Close the door on a strip of paper; if it pulls out easily, the gasket is not sealing. Replace with the correct US Stove gasket kit.
- 2. Check flue connections: Inspect all vent pipe joints for gaps or loose connections. Reseal with high-temperature silicone or replace damaged sections.
- 3. Clean vent and chimney: Thoroughly clean the vent pipe and chimney to remove soot and creosote. A blocked flue can force smoke back into the room.
- 4. Address house pressure: If the home is very tight or exhaust fans are running, they can create negative pressure. Provide make-up air or install an outside air kit if recommended by US Stove.
- 5. Test draft: After cleaning and sealing, restart the furnace and check for proper draft. If smoke leakage persists, have a professional evaluate the venting system.
