Possible Causes

Failed expansion vessel, Overfilled heating system, Faulty pressure relief valve, Blocked connection between vessel and system

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Hot water can cause burns. Allow the system to cool before working on the safety valve or expansion vessel.

  • Check system pressure: Read the pressure gauge when the system is cold. If it is above the recommended value (often 1.5 bar), drain some water from a drain cock until the pressure drops.
  • Test expansion vessel: A technician can isolate and check the air charge in the expansion vessel using a tire gauge. If the air side is flat or waterlogged, the vessel must be recharged or replaced.
  • Inspect safety valve: If the valve continues to drip at normal pressure, it may be fouled by debris. It should be replaced rather than repaired.
  • Check vessel connection: Ensure the pipe between the system and the expansion vessel is not blocked by sludge.
