Possible Causes
Seized motor shaft, jammed gear train, stripped drive sprocket, failed motor capacitor (on AC motor models)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before removing covers. Do not run the opener repeatedly when it is stalled; this can overheat the motor.
- Step 1 – Check door movement by hand: Pull the emergency release and move the door manually. If the door is heavy or jammed, call a door technician to repair the door before further opener testing.
- Step 2 – Inspect drive system: Remove the opener cover (if user‑serviceable per manual). Check the B&D drive sprocket, belt or chain, and internal gears for broken teeth, debris, or binding.
- Step 3 – Check motor shaft: With power off, gently try to rotate the motor shaft or drive sprocket by hand. It should turn smoothly with some resistance. If it is seized, the motor is likely failed and must be replaced.
- Step 4 – Inspect capacitor (if fitted): Many B&D AC motors use a start/run capacitor. Look for a bulging, leaking, or cracked capacitor can. If damaged, replace with an identical value and voltage‑rated capacitor.
- Step 5 – Reassemble and test: Refit the cover, restore power, and run a single open/close cycle. If E5 returns quickly, discontinue use and arrange for motor or gear assembly replacement.
