Possible Causes
Photo eye sensors out of alignment, Obstruction blocking sensor beam, Dirty sensor lenses, Loose sensor bracket or hardware
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power to the Chamberlain opener at the outlet before touching wiring. Do not operate the door with the safety sensors bypassed.
Steps to fix:
- Inspect the sensor LEDs: On most Chamberlain openers, each safety sensor (mounted near the bottom of the tracks) has an LED. One is the sending unit (usually amber) and the other is the receiving unit (usually green). The green LED must be solid ON for proper operation.
- Clear obstructions: Remove any items (brooms, trash cans, bikes, leaves, spider webs) that may be blocking the invisible beam between the sensors.
- Clean the lenses: Use a soft cloth and mild glass cleaner to gently clean each sensor lens. Dirt or condensation can weaken the beam.
- Realign the sensors: Loosen the wing nut or mounting screw on each sensor bracket. Rotate or slide the sensors until the receiving sensor LED turns solid. Tighten the hardware while keeping the LED solid.
- Check mounting height: Ensure both sensors are mounted at the same height (typically 4–6 inches above the floor) and facing each other directly.
- Test the door: Restore power. Press the wall control. The door should now close normally. If the opener still shows 1-1, proceed to check for damaged sensor wires.
- Inspect wiring: With power off, inspect the low-voltage wires from the sensors back to the opener’s terminal strip. Look for staples through the wire, cuts, or corrosion. Repair any damaged sections with wire nuts or replace the run.
