Possible Causes
Failed start capacitor, Loose capacitor terminals, Damaged capacitor wiring, Incorrect replacement capacitor value
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the opener. Capacitors can hold a charge; discharge the capacitor by shorting its terminals with an insulated resistor or follow manufacturer procedures. If unsure, contact a technician.
- Locate the capacitor: On many Craftsman chain-drive units, the start capacitor is a cylindrical component mounted inside the opener housing near the motor.
- Inspect visually: Look for bulging ends, leaking electrolyte, or burn marks. Any of these signs indicate replacement is needed.
- Check connections: Ensure the spade terminals are tight and not corroded. Loose connections can mimic a bad capacitor.
- Replace capacitor: Note the microfarad (µF) rating and voltage printed on the old capacitor. Install an exact-match Craftsman-approved replacement. Transfer wires one at a time to the new capacitor to avoid miswiring.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall the opener cover, plug the unit back in, and operate the door. If the motor now starts smoothly and the 6-flash code is gone, the repair is successful. Persistent 6 flashes may indicate a motor or logic board issue.
