Possible Causes

No AC supply at outlet, Tripped GFCI or breaker, Failed internal transformer on control board, Burned trace or blown MOV on logic board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the opener before removing covers. Use a non-contact voltage tester if you are not comfortable working around live voltage. If you see burned components, contact a professional.

Steps:

  • Check outlet power: Plug a lamp or drill into the same ceiling outlet. If it does not work, reset the GFCI or breaker and test again.
  • Inspect power cord: With the opener unplugged, check the Genie power cord for cuts, crushed sections, or loose prongs. If damaged, the cord or entire powerhead should be replaced.
  • Verify powerhead LEDs: Restore power. If both the red STATUS LED and blue LEARN LED remain off while the outlet is known good, the internal transformer or logic board is likely failed.
  • Remove light lens and cover: Unplug the unit, remove the light cover and housing screws, and gently lower the cover to expose the control board. Look for burned spots, cracked components, or a swollen MOV (surge protector).
  • Decision: If there is visible board damage or no low-voltage output to the wall console terminals, replace the Genie control board assembly. Board-level repair is not recommended for homeowners.
