Possible Causes

Mis-set open/close limits, Failed travel module (encoder) on motor, Loose or damaged limit harness, Stripped carriage or drive screw/belt causing false travel feedback

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Door is heavy. Pull the emergency release only when the door is fully closed if possible. Keep clear of the door path.

Steps:

  • Check door balance: With opener disengaged, lift the door by hand. It should move smoothly and stay about halfway open. If not, call a door professional to adjust springs before adjusting the opener.
  • Reprogram limits: Follow your Genie manual to reset travel limits. Typically, press and hold the SET/PROGRAM button until LEDs blink, then use the UP/DOWN buttons to set open and close positions, confirming each with SET.
  • Inspect travel module harness: Remove the light cover and locate the small harness from the motor/travel module to the control board. Ensure it is fully seated and not pinched or damaged.
  • Check drive system: Inspect the belt/chain or screw drive for stripped sections or binding. Repair any mechanical issues before retrying limit programming.
  • Replace travel module: If limits cannot be set and F3 persists, replace the Genie travel module / encoder assembly specific to your model.
