Possible Causes

Door binding in tracks, Force settings too low, Worn motor or gear causing high current draw, Misaligned rail or bent track

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Never increase force to compensate for a heavy or binding door. Fix door mechanics first. Disconnect power before mechanical work.

Steps:

  • Inspect tracks and rollers: Check for bent tracks, damaged rollers, or obstructions. Clean tracks and lubricate rollers and hinges with garage door lubricant (not grease).
  • Test door by hand: Disconnect the opener and move the door manually. It should move smoothly with moderate effort. If it is heavy or sticks, have springs and hardware serviced by a professional.
  • Adjust force settings: On many Genie models, there are OPEN FORCE and CLOSE FORCE dials or electronic settings. Increase slightly (1 step at a time) and test. Do not exceed manufacturer recommendations.
  • Inspect drive gear: Remove the cover and inspect the main drive gear and sprocket. If teeth are worn or plastic shavings are present, replace the Genie drive gear kit.
  • Retest: After mechanical corrections and force adjustment, clear the error by cycling power and run a full open/close test.
