Possible Causes
Open motor winding, Shorted motor winding, Failed motor start capacitor (on AC motor models), Loose motor harness connection to control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the opener before removing covers. Capacitors can hold a charge; do not short capacitor terminals with tools.
Steps:
- Check for jam: Disconnect the door and ensure the rail and carriage move freely by hand. A jammed carriage can overload the motor.
- Inspect motor harness: Remove the cover and verify the motor plug/harness is fully seated on the control board and not burned or melted.
- Listen for motor: With the cover off and power restored, press the wall button. If you hear only a relay click and no motor hum, suspect the motor or capacitor.
- Inspect capacitor (if present): Many Genie AC openers have a cylindrical start capacitor mounted near the motor. Look for bulging, leaking, or cracked casing. Replace with the exact Genie motor capacitor rating if defective.
- Replace motor assembly: If the capacitor is good and F5 persists, the Genie motor assembly is likely failed and should be replaced as a unit.
