Possible Causes
Down travel limit set too far, Door binding in tracks, Weak or broken torsion/extension spring, Down force setting too low
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before adjusting hardware. Garage door springs are under high tension; do not loosen or wind springs unless you are trained.
- Test door balance: Pull the emergency release on the Guardian opener to disconnect the trolley. Lift the door by hand halfway. It should stay in place. If it slams down or is very heavy, the springs need professional adjustment.
- Inspect tracks and rollers: Check for bent tracks, damaged rollers, or debris. Clean the tracks and lubricate rollers and hinges with a garage-door-rated lubricant (not grease).
- Adjust down travel limit: On the Guardian opener head, locate the down travel (close limit) adjustment screw or digital setting. Reduce the down travel slightly so the door stops firmly on the floor without pushing hard against it.
- Adjust down force (if available): Increase the down force slightly per the Guardian manual, but do not exceed recommended settings. The door should reverse when it hits a 2x4 laid flat on the floor under the door.
- Re-test safety reversal: Reconnect the opener, restore power, and test closing. If the door still reverses immediately, re-check for binding or call a professional to inspect springs and door hardware.
