Possible Causes

Broken sensor wire, Shorted sensor cable, Incorrect wiring at opener terminals, Failed photo eye sensor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect mains power before working on wiring. Do not bypass safety beams permanently.

  • Verify wiring polarity: Merlin safety beams typically use 2‑wire low‑voltage connections. Ensure the same color wire goes to the same terminal on both sensors and the opener (e.g., white to +, black to - if marked).
  • Continuity test: With power off, disconnect the sensor wires at the opener. Use a multimeter on continuity/ohms to test each conductor from opener end to sensor end. Replace the cable if open circuit is detected.
  • Check for shorts: Inspect the cable for crushed insulation or water ingress at junction boxes. If resistance between the two conductors is very low (near 0 Ω) when disconnected from sensors, the cable is shorted and must be replaced.
  • Test sensors individually: Temporarily connect one sensor pair at a time directly at the opener with a short test lead. If the code clears with test leads but not with installed wiring, the field wiring is faulty. If the code persists even with test leads, one of the sensors is defective and should be replaced as a pair.
  • Re‑secure terminals: Reinsert wires into the correct sensor terminals and tighten screws firmly.
