Possible Causes
Door binding in tracks, Broken or weak torsion/extension springs, Bent track or jammed rollers, Force setting too low on opener
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Garage door springs are under high tension and can cause serious injury. Do not adjust torsion springs yourself unless you are trained and have proper tools. Disconnect power before mechanical inspection.
- Test door balance: Pull the emergency release cord to disengage the Merlin opener. Manually lift the door halfway. It should stay in place. If it falls or shoots up, the springs are out of balance and require professional adjustment or replacement.
- Inspect tracks and rollers: Check for dents, bends, or obstructions in the vertical and horizontal tracks. Remove debris and gently straighten minor bends with pliers. Replace severely damaged sections.
- Lubricate moving parts: Apply a silicone‑based or lithium garage door lubricant to rollers (except nylon tires), hinges, and the torsion spring (lightly). Do not use heavy grease.
- Check door travel path: Ensure nothing is contacting the door (locks, handles, timber stops). Verify the door is not rubbing against the jambs.
- Adjust force setting: On Merlin openers with force adjustment dials or menu settings, slightly increase the DOWN force according to the user manual. Make small adjustments and retest. Do not exceed recommended limits.
- Re‑engage opener and test: Reconnect the emergency release, restore power, and run a full open/close cycle. If the door still reverses and feels heavy, contact a professional door technician.
