Possible Causes
Safety photo eyes blocked, Safety photo eyes misaligned, Damaged photo eye wiring harness, Failed photo eye transmitter or receiver
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power to the Mighty Mule opener at the breaker before touching wiring. Keep the door in the down position or securely clamped to the track.
Steps:
- Inspect for obstructions: Check both photo eye units at the bottom of the door tracks. Remove any debris, spider webs, or objects blocking the beam.
- Check alignment: Loosen the mounting brackets slightly and adjust the photo eyes so they face each other directly at the same height. Tighten the brackets and verify that the indicator LEDs on both eyes are solid (not flickering).
- Verify wiring: With power off, inspect the low-voltage wires from the photo eyes back to the Mighty Mule control board. Look for staples through the wire, cuts, or corrosion at terminals. Re-strip and re-terminate any damaged conductors.
- Test operation: Restore power. Confirm that the photo eye LEDs are solid. Try closing the door with the wall button. If the door only runs while holding the button, the safety circuit is still open.
- Replace faulty eyes if needed: If one LED will not light or flickers despite good wiring and alignment, replace the photo eye pair with a compatible Mighty Mule safety sensor kit.
