Possible Causes

Worn drive gear teeth, Loose chain on sprocket, Loose rail mounting bolts, Worn trolley or carriage

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the opener before tightening hardware or opening the housing.

Steps to reduce noise and repair:

  • Inspect chain/belt tension: For chain-drive Motorlift units, adjust the tension so the chain hangs about 1/4 inch below the rail at midpoint. Do not overtighten.
  • Tighten hardware: Check all rail mounting bolts, header bracket bolts, and opener mounting straps. Tighten any loose fasteners.
  • Inspect trolley: Slide the trolley along the rail by hand and listen for grinding. Replace the trolley if its internal teeth are worn.
  • Check internal gear: If grinding comes from inside the opener, open the housing and inspect the main drive gear. Replace the gear and sprocket kit if worn.
  • Lubricate moving parts: Apply garage door lubricant to hinges, rollers, and the chain (lightly).
