Possible Causes

Misadjusted Nice mechanical limit switches, Broken limit switch cam or actuator, Faulty encoder or Hall sensor on Nice motor, Disconnected limit/encoder wiring harness

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power and ensure the door is mechanically supported before working near the drive or springs.

  • Check limit switch wiring: On many Nice sectional door operators, two or more limit switches connect to the control board via a small harness. Confirm the plug is fully seated and wires are not broken at the connector.
  • Inspect limit cams: On chain or belt drives, plastic cams on the shaft actuate the limit switches. Rotate the shaft manually (with power off) and verify each cam physically clicks its switch. Replace cracked or missing cams.
  • Re‑set limits: Follow the Nice manual to reprogram or mechanically adjust open and close limits. Typically this involves pressing and holding a SET or PGM button and moving the door to the desired positions.
  • Encoder/Hall sensor check: Some Nice motors use an encoder disc or Hall sensor. Inspect the sensor and disc for dirt, damage, or misalignment. Ensure the sensor is firmly mounted and the disc is not loose on the shaft.
  • Test operation: Restore power and run a full open/close cycle. If E3 reappears and the motor moves only briefly, the encoder or limit switch assembly may be defective and should be replaced.
