Possible Causes
Misadjusted open/close travel limits, Faulty travel module or limit switch assembly, Stripped limit drive gear, Loose limit nuts on screw-drive rail
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the opener before removing covers. Do not stand under a moving door.
- 1. Check door balance first: Pull the emergency release and move the door by hand. It should lift smoothly and stay about halfway open. If not, call a door professional to adjust springs before adjusting the opener.
- 2. Locate travel/limit controls: On many Overhead Door units, travel limits are adjusted via dials or electronic buttons on the opener head or via a travel module on the rail.
- 3. Reset travel limits: Follow the specific programming instructions for your model (often printed on the opener cover or in the manual). Typically, you will set the full open position, then the full closed position using the wall button and adjustment controls.
- 4. Inspect limit mechanism: For screw-drive or chain-drive models with mechanical limit nuts, remove the opener cover and inspect the limit nuts and cams on the shaft. Ensure they are not cracked, stripped, or loose. Tighten or replace as needed.
- 5. Inspect travel module: On belt-drive and DC models, a travel module or encoder may be mounted on the rail or motor. Check for loose mounting, damaged wiring, or broken plastic tabs. Replace the module if physically damaged or if limits cannot be set.
- 6. Restore power and test: Plug the opener back in and run a full open/close cycle. If the LED still flashes 3 times and travel cannot be set, the travel module or logic board may require replacement.
