Possible Causes
Corrupted control board firmware, Failed logic board memory, Low-voltage short on wall control circuit, Incorrect accessory wiring
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before working on wiring or the control board.
- 1. Disconnect accessories: Remove all low-voltage wires from the opener terminals (wall console, safety sensors, keypads, etc.). Label them first so you can reconnect correctly.
- 2. Power up with no accessories: Plug the opener back in with only power connected. If the 8-flash code clears and the opener can be operated using the learn/program button, an external accessory or wire is shorted.
- 3. Reconnect circuits one at a time: With power off, reconnect the safety sensors first and test. Then reconnect the wall console and any other accessories, testing after each. When the code reappears, the last reconnected circuit is suspect.
- 4. Inspect wall control wiring: Look for staples through the wire, crushed insulation, or reversed polarity on smart wall consoles. Replace damaged wire.
- 5. Attempt a board reset: Some Overhead Door models allow a factory reset via a specific button sequence (consult your manual). Perform the reset and reprogram remotes if needed.
- 6. Replace logic board if fault persists: If the opener still shows 8 flashes with all accessories disconnected, the control board memory or processor is likely defective and must be replaced.
