Possible Causes
Dry or worn rollers and hinges, Loose opener mounting hardware, Loose chain tension, Worn drive gear or sprocket
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before tightening hardware. Keep clear of moving parts.
- 1. Lubricate door hardware: Apply garage door lubricant to rollers (except nylon wheels), hinges, and bearings. Do not grease the tracks.
- 2. Tighten door hardware: With the door closed, tighten all hinge, roller bracket, and track bracket bolts.
- 3. Check opener mounting: Tighten lag screws at the header bracket and ceiling mounting straps. Add angle iron bracing if the opener flexes.
- 4. Adjust chain tension: For chain-drive models, adjust tension so there is about 1/4 inch sag at the midpoint. Overly loose chains slap the rail.
- 5. Inspect drive gear and sprocket: Remove the opener cover and check for worn gears or wobbling sprocket. Replace the gear and sprocket kit if worn.
