Possible Causes

Door binding in tracks, Broken or weak torsion/extension springs, Misadjusted force settings, Bent rail or misaligned header bracket

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety warning: High spring tension can cause serious injury. Do not attempt to adjust torsion springs yourself unless you are trained and have proper tools.

  • 1. Test door balance: Pull the emergency release and move the door by hand. It should stay at mid‑travel without falling or rising. If it slams shut or is very heavy, the springs are not balanced and must be serviced by a professional.
  • 2. Inspect tracks and rollers: Look for bent tracks, crushed sections, or rollers that are seized. Lubricate metal rollers and hinges with garage door lubricant (not grease). Straighten minor track misalignment by loosening the brackets slightly and re‑plumbing the track.
  • 3. Check the rail and header bracket: Ensure the Sommer rail is straight and firmly attached to the header bracket. Tighten loose lag screws and mounting hardware.
  • 4. Adjust force settings: On Sommer units with adjustable force, follow the manual to slightly increase the up/down force only after confirming the door moves freely by hand. Do not over‑increase force; this is a safety risk.
  • 5. Run a full cycle: Reconnect the carriage and run the opener through a full open and close cycle. If E2 reappears, disconnect the door and run the opener alone. If it runs fine without the door, the problem is mechanical with the door system.

If the opener shows E2 even with the door disconnected, the motor carriage or control board may be over‑sensing load and require replacement.
