Possible Causes
Door too heavy or unbalanced, Motor carriage internal friction, Rail contamination causing drag, Overly high force setting causing overheating
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: If you smell burning or see smoke, disconnect power immediately and do not reuse the opener until inspected.
- 1. Allow cool‑down: Unplug the opener for 20–30 minutes to let the motor cool. Plug back in and test.
- 2. Check door balance and hardware: Disconnect the opener and move the door by hand. If it is heavy or binds, have springs and hardware serviced. Lubricate hinges and rollers.
- 3. Inspect the rail interior: Remove the motor carriage (per Sommer instructions) and check for debris, dents, or dried grease inside the rail. Clean and apply a light, manufacturer‑approved lubricant if specified.
- 4. Reduce force settings: If force was previously increased to compensate for a stiff door, correct the door problem and then reduce force to factory‑recommended levels.
- 5. Re‑test with door disconnected: Run the motor carriage alone along the rail. If E6 still appears, the motor carriage assembly is likely failing and should be replaced.
