Possible Causes
Damaged encoder in motor carriage, Loose encoder connector on control board, Broken encoder wiring harness, Excessive vibration causing intermittent signal
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power before removing covers or accessing the rail interior.
- 1. Inspect harness connections: Remove the opener cover and locate the small multi‑wire harness from the rail/motor carriage to the control board. Ensure the plug is fully seated and not corroded.
- 2. Check for cable damage: Follow the harness along the rail. Look for cuts, pinch points, or insulation damage. Replace the harness if any conductor is exposed or broken.
- 3. Test with door disconnected: Release the door and run the opener. If E8 occurs even with no load, the encoder or carriage is suspect.
- 4. Inspect carriage for play: Excessive wobble or grinding in the carriage can disturb the encoder. If the carriage is noisy or rough, replace the motor carriage assembly.
- 5. Replace encoder/carriage: On most Sommer models the encoder is integrated into the motor carriage. Replace the entire carriage assembly if the encoder is faulty.
