Possible Causes

Obstruction between safety sensors, Misaligned photo eyes, Damaged sensor wiring, Failed photo eye emitter or receiver

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Do not bypass or permanently disable the safety sensors. They prevent the door from closing on people, pets, or vehicles.

  • Clear the path: Remove any objects, cobwebs, or debris between the two Wayne Dalton safety sensors mounted near the bottom of the tracks.
  • Check indicator LEDs: Each sensor usually has an LED. One should be solid (power), the other solid when aligned. If one or both are off or flickering, alignment or power is an issue.
  • Realign sensors: Loosen the wing nuts on the sensor brackets. Gently rotate each sensor until both LEDs are solid. Tighten the nuts while holding alignment.
  • Inspect wiring: Follow the thin low-voltage wires from each sensor back to the opener head. Look for staples driven through the insulation, cuts, or corrosion at the terminals. Repair damaged sections or re-terminate wires securely.
  • Test operation: Press the wall button to close the door. If the door only closes when you hold the button down, the sensors are still not seeing each other. Recheck alignment and wiring.
  • Replace sensors if needed: If one sensor LED never lights even with correct wiring, replace the photo eye pair with a compatible Wayne Dalton safety sensor kit.
