Possible Causes

Excessive consecutive cycles causing motor to overheat, Blocked ventilation around opener head, Failing motor drawing high current, Binding door increasing load

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Do not repeatedly try to run an overheated motor; this can cause permanent damage or fire risk.

  • Allow cool-down: Unplug the opener for 20–30 minutes to allow the internal thermal protector to reset.
  • Check door balance and hardware: After cool-down, disconnect the door using the emergency release and move it by hand. If it is heavy or binds, have the springs and hardware serviced.
  • Improve ventilation: Ensure the opener head is not covered with insulation or stored items. Provide at least several inches of clearance around the motor housing.
  • Limit rapid cycling: Avoid running the door repeatedly in quick succession. Most residential openers are rated for limited cycles per hour.
  • Persistent F7: If the error returns after minimal use and the door moves freely, the motor windings or thermal protector may be failing. Replacement of the motor or entire opener head is recommended.
