Possible Causes
Tripped wall GFCI or breaker, Tripped disposal reset button (overload protector), Loose or damaged power cord, Faulty internal wiring at terminal block
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Always disconnect power before touching the disposal. Unplug the unit or switch OFF the circuit breaker. Never put your hand into the grinding chamber.
- Step 1 – Check the wall outlet and GFCI: Plug a lamp or small appliance into the same outlet to confirm power. If there is no power, locate and reset the kitchen GFCI outlet and/or reset the breaker at the panel.
- Step 2 – Press the reset button: On AmazonCommercial disposals, the red or black reset/overload button is typically on the bottom of the motor housing. With power OFF, press it firmly until it clicks. Restore power and test the wall switch.
- Step 3 – Inspect the power cord and terminal block: If your model uses a cord kit, unplug it and inspect for cuts, burns, or loose prongs. For hardwired units, turn OFF the breaker, remove the wiring cover at the base, and verify that the wire nuts are tight and no wires are burnt at the terminal block.
- Step 4 – Test again: Restore power and flip the wall switch. If the unit still shows no sign of life and the reset will not stay engaged, the internal wiring or overload protector may be damaged.
- When to stop: If the breaker trips immediately or you see burnt wiring, discontinue use and contact a qualified technician or replace the unit.
