Possible Causes
Defective wall switch, Loose wire at switch terminals, Open neutral or hot conductor in switch loop, Miswired control circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF power at the breaker before opening any electrical boxes. Use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm power is off.
- Step 1 – Verify outlet power: If the disposal is cord-connected, test the outlet with another appliance. If it works, the issue is between the outlet and the disposal.
- Step 2 – Inspect wall switch: Remove the switch cover and gently pull out the switch. Check for loose wires or burnt terminals. Tighten screws and re-secure wires as needed.
- Step 3 – Replace faulty switch: If the switch feels loose, does not click, or shows signs of damage, replace it with a new single-pole switch rated for the load.
- Step 4 – For hardwired units: Check the junction box at the disposal for loose connections between the switch leg and the disposal leads.
- Step 5 – Restore power and test: Turn the breaker back ON and test the disposal.
- Note: If you are not comfortable working with household wiring, hire a licensed electrician.
