Possible Causes
Grease and food residue on grind components, Sludge buildup in discharge elbow and P-trap, Insufficient flushing after use, Grinding of high-fat foods
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF power before any cleaning that involves reaching near the chamber. Do not use harsh chemical drain cleaners.
- Step 1 – Mechanical cleaning: With power OFF, use a long-handled brush to scrub the underside of the splash guard and upper chamber walls.
- Step 2 – Ice and salt treatment: Restore power, run a tray of ice cubes with a handful of rock salt through the disposal while running cold water. This helps scour the grind components.
- Step 3 – Baking soda and vinegar: Turn OFF power again. Pour 1/2 cup baking soda into the disposal, followed by 1 cup white vinegar. Let it foam for 10–15 minutes, then flush with hot water.
- Step 4 – Clean P-trap if needed: If odors persist, remove and clean the P-trap and horizontal drain line to remove sludge.
- Step 5 – Prevent recurrence: Always run cold water for 15–30 seconds after grinding to flush debris completely.
